Meet Sophia…the robot. 🤖

Sophia, the worlds smartest robot, is an artificially intelligent robot created by Hanson Robotics. She represents the coming of a new age of robots closely resembling humans both in intelligence and in looks. She also is the worlds first robot citizen. She has appeared on the Tonight Show and Good Morning Britain. David Hanson, Sophia’s creator even claims that she had a personality!

But lets slow down, it won’t be like Ultron, from The Avengers, where he aims to take over the world and kill all humans (most likely)💀. To understand Sophia, we need to know some basics about Artificial Intelligence and how it works.

What is Artificial Intelligence? 🧠 + 🤖

the theory and development of computer systems able to perform tasks that normally require human intelligence, such as visual perception, speech recognition, decision-making, and translation between languages

So basically it the ability to machines to make intelligent decisions, similar to humans.

Why do we need Artificial Intelligence?

Let’s look at a few examples:

With the rise of self driving cars, we need the cars to be smarter. With all the sensors that they have such as LIDAR, they are constantly taking in massive amount of data. With all the different situations on the road with so many different variables, it needs to be able to make decisions on its own.

TESLA’s per-camera networks are able to analyze semantic segmentation, object detection and monocular depth estimation! A full auto-pilot network consists of 48 neural networks that take almost 70,000 GPU hours to train!

Health Care:

Doctors are awesome, but they do have their limitations.
